Documentary: Still Standing - How to Never Say 'I Give Up'!

Imagine being bedridden for a quarter of a century and yet being unstoppable. Rajinder Johar is one such man who has spent the best years of his life on a bed and never let his disability come in the way of living a full life.
Still Standing A Documentary on Rajinder Johar
A documentary exploring the life of Rajinder Johar, 'Still Standing' is one of the most awe- inspiring tales you'd ever experience. Shot as a result of a professionally rivalry in 1986, Rajinder Johar was pronounced hundred percent disabled by doctors in the months following the unfortunate incident. Mulling over the cold blooded heinous action on the part of a former colleague, questioning destiny, blaming God and falling in the deep recesses of the darkness of one's own heart life could have been over for Johar but he chose not to fall prey to anything like that.
Instead Rajinder Johar decided to change the way the world looked at disability.
Written, directed and produced by Pankaj Johar, Still Standing explores how the filmmaker's father has been working relentless to help other disabled people stand on their feet. Uplifting not only their spirits but transforming their lives by guiding them to become self-reliant, the documentary shows how one man has single-handedly helped changed mindsets.
Worth Noticing in Still Standing
A highly emotional film Still Standing is one of the most poignant documentaries you'd see and yet it never becomes preachy. Working on two parallels Still Standing, besides being the story of a father and a shining beacon of hope for thousands of people, also follows a group of disabled individuals and highlights the changes in their lives once they come in contact with Rajinder Johar and the effect it has on their lives.
What separates Still Standing from most of the documentaries made by family members is that somewhere they tend to become overtly familiar. Even though a son would know his father best and a son, undoubtedly, would be the best person to chronicle the life of a father, a son could also be the wrong person to make such a film due to his proximity with the subject.
Pankaj Johar's biggest achievement has been his strength to view his own father's life and work from a very objective point of view. Never once do you get a feeling about the sheer difficulties the family would have gone through and yet you know the pain that close and immediate family would have suffered. Rather the entire journey of Rajinder Johar's life and his work in the disability sector has been told more like a personal reportage more than anything else.
A nation where the majority of its 60 million disabled population survives below the poverty line; Rajinder Johar is not only a phenomenon but also an inspiration. He started with the thought of doing something for someone who was in a similar situation and today with the help of his family and friends runs Family of Disabled, a foundation that not only counsels the physically challenged but also helps them in starting up their own trade, providing their children access to education and guiding them to find their rightful place in this world.
Someone once famously mentioned, "It doesn't matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was." In Pankaj Johar's case it's equally important to everyone to know the man his father really is. A self-financed documentary that is a labor of love, Still Standing is a celebration of a life that didn't let anything stop it from living.

Union and Divorce Within the Television Academy

In 1955, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) was established in New York by Ed Sullivan, to serve as a partnering organization to ATAS, helping to oversee the Emmy Awards as well as to serve East Coast television interests. They also saw to establishing regional branches of the organization throughout the nation, so that each could also develop its own Emmy awards specifically to honor achievements in local programming that might otherwise go overlooked. In 1957, the two Academies officially merged to operate collectively under the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences name. Ed Sullivan served as the organization's president - and from there, every two years, the merged Television Academies would alternate having one of its members fill the position.
Tensions between the East and West coast chapters had begun brewing by the early 1960s, with one source of dispute being the decision to relocate the national office from New York to Hollywood in 1964. Academy members in New York were rubbed the wrong way by the relocation, but Academy members in Los Angeles were struggling with concerns regarding the purity of the Emmys and Academy membership regulations, concerned that the East Coast chapter was too liberal and overly inclusive to allow every member of its chapter to enjoy full voting rights. In contrast, the East Coast chapter regarded the West Coast chapter as too elitist and overly exclusive when it came to those same matters with its membership.
By 1976, the disputes had grown so fierce that they threatened to dismantle the union between the two organizations. In an effort to resolve their differences, each chapter selected its own five member team to meet for two days of negotiations, with one of the conclusions being reached that only members participating in national television would be allowed full voting rights - which would basically mean that only members of the regional chapters would be excluded form voting. Still, the New York chapter was not satisfied with the negotiations, and after that year's Emmy Awards ceremony, the Los Angeles filed a lawsuit to dissolve the organization.
The response from the East Coast chapter was to counter sue for the rights to the Television Academy as a whole. Until the groups finally agreed to part ways from one another in 1977 and a legal settlement had been reached, with both chapters retaining national status as well as their original names, day to day operations of both chapters had been stifled while both had their assets frozen throughout the course of litigation. According to the terms of their separation, the Los Angeles chapter would remain in control of their own chapter as well as the primetime Emmy awards, and the New York chapter would have jurisdiction over its own chapter, the nineteen regional chapters that held their own Emmys ceremonies, and control over the Daytime, News, Documentary and Sports Emmy awards. Both chapters would retain ownership of the Emmy statue and trademark, and both chapters grant one another 15% of the television revenues from their own awards show broadcasts.

What's the Deal With Women Superheroes on Screen?

If you're a regular viewer of superhero movies, you probably would have noticed how poorly female superheroes are treated on screen. Some of the most loved female heroes have either been bumped to minor roles in comic book movies, or in worst cases headlined some of the worst movies over the past two decades.
Given the current crop of superhero movies, you would expect to see at least some films devoted to women superheroes. No such luck. If anything Hollywood seems to be deliberately avoiding making films based on female heroes. Take for instance Wonder Woman. One of the most beloved female DC characters of all time was caught in movie development hell for a long time. Even when DC had appeared to get the ball rolling for a Wonder Woman TV series, the show was cancelled after its pilot episode.
1) The X-Men franchise:
The X-Men have some of the most famous female superheroes. Yet we've barely seen anything from them on screen. Mutant goddess Storm was reduced to spending the entire two movies behind the controls of the X- Jet. Bryan Singer spent the entire second X-Men movie building up Jean Grey's split persona as the destructive Phoenix, for Brett Ratner to keep the character in silence for the whole of The Last Stand. It seems Fox are afraid to unleash the full potential of their female mutants, even if the mutant's power is an essential story device.
2) Fantastic 4:
Yet, another one of Fox's disaster movies. The Fantastic 4 members were terribly cast. With the exception of Chris Evans as The Human Torch, Loan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis and Jessica Alba should stay clear of superhero films in the future. Perhaps the worst in the bunch was Alba as the Invisible Woman. Were the guys behind Fantastic 4 unsure of Alba's looks? As she was constantly changing contact lenses and hair colour in attempt to look more Barbie as the film progressed. Perhaps they should have focused less on making Alba undress in every F4 movie, and more so on character development.
3) Elektra and Catwoman:
Two of the most beloved female superheroes from Marvel and DC have had the misfortune of starring in perhaps two of the worst comic book movies to date. Despite impressing in Daredevil, Jennifer Garner was forced to endure a 2005 spinoff movie, with ridiculous plot lines and terrible acting. I though Garner was one of the only few highlights in Daredevil, showing that female heroes can have substance, yet all that was in pushed aside in Elektra, as Garner just became a device for action sequences.
Catwoman is a different beast all together. Halle Berry is awkwardly cast (and no it has nothing to do with her race) as she is stripped of any essence of the beloved DC character. This is not the Selina Kyle from the comics. No, Berry's Catwoman lacks any presence or motivation, and it's hard to believe why she takes up the mantle 0f Catwoman if it's just to get revenge on a few who wronged her. Did I mention the movie is ridiculed by terrible dialogue and CGI? I just hope Anne Hathaway restores Selina Kyle to cinematic glory and she isn't just in The Dark Knight Rises movie as someone for Bruce to bed.
